We stand on the fringe precariously, somewhere between big enough to be counted and not big enough to be heard. Yet there are Bills being considered, Hearings being attended, and Committees in the process of deciding issues that could certainly impact the nanocorp intimately. Who will hear us if we don't stand up and shout "Here I am!"? We need to identify:
This topic will focus on what we can do to change things that affect us. [This message has been edited by Timlynn (edited 25 May 1999).] |

Be informed. See what your representatives know/think about issues that impact our nanocorps. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES If you don't know who YOUR congresspersons are, find out. For an open look at what Congress is doing for small business in general (some of which IS relevant even now to us at the sohodojo) visit the Committee on Small Business, chaired by Representative James M. Talent of MO. One subcomcommittee we should all keep our sights on: Donna Christian-Christensen, Ranking Member The House Small Business Committee produces a monthly newsletter detailing recent news of interest to the small business community. Be informed. Find out who supports us; who hasn't got a clue. Then GET INVOLVED. Stand up and be counted. US SENATE If you don't know who your senators are, what committees they sit on or how to contact them via the Internet check it out. The Senate Committee on Small Business is well represented by a cross-section of states. As chairman of this Senate Committee, Senator Christopher S. "Kit" Bond of Missouri has sponsored two important bills that may directly affect the nanocorp: Among the other bills being considered in Washington these two are most important to us at the moment. But, it is not yet clear how much size matters when applying for a Y2K Readiness Act loan. [This message has been edited by Jim_Salmons (edited 31 October 1999).] |

There are lots of ways to get involved in the issues and legislation that affect the nanocorp. You can attend meetings, send e-mail, make phone calls and write letters to your representatives to make your opinion count. The sohodojo is tracking several pieces of legislation to make sure our tic-mark gets in the right column on the "who cares" spread sheets and to let our representatives know how important an issue is to the nanocorp. In all reality, it takes time to keep abreast of legislation that affects the nanocorp, time that has to be added into the 'managing everything' equation. We searched around to find the small business special interest lobby group that could help us manage our political involvement on general issues for which we need to take a stand. We decided to join the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) to help us. [This message has been edited by Jim_Salmons (edited 31 October 1999).] |

One of the best places to make your voice count is through the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB). NFIB has long been a lobbying effort on behalf of small business in the US. With instant access through the Internet to both information and opportunities for action, the role of the NFIB has become even more important. If you want to know the status of key US legislation affecting your US business, who to contact and what you can do to make a difference, the NFIB is a good place to start. We here at sohodojo recommend membership in the NFIB to help you manage your time as you make your voice count on behalf of small business in the US. |
